When JPG to PNG is useful
JPG is the everyday format for photographs, but many design tools and some print workflows work more cleanly with PNG. Saving as PNG avoids another JPEG compression pass if you need to crop, annotate, or overlay the image.
A JPG never contains transparency. The PNG copy remains fully opaque. Keep the original JPG if you still need the smaller photo for sharing.
Frequently asked questions
Will converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stores the pixels you already have. It does not reconstruct detail removed when the JPG was compressed.
Why is the PNG larger than the JPG?
PNG uses lossless compression. Photographs contain many unique colors, so the PNG often needs more space than the lossy JPG.
Can this add a transparent background?
No. JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG remains opaque. Use a graphics editor if you need to cut the subject out.
