When HEIC to PNG is the right choice

JPG is the usual answer when someone only needs to open an iPhone photo elsewhere. PNG is better when you will keep editing: crop, retouch, add graphics, or place the image in a layout where another lossy re-encode would soften edges and text.

PNG does not magically add transparency that HEIC stills never had. Most camera photos are opaque. What you gain is a widely supported lossless container that Photoshop, Figma, and many printers accept without asking for HEVC codecs.

Frequently asked questions

Is PNG better quality than converting to JPG?

PNG avoids a second lossy compression step. If you will edit or print the image, that usually matters more than file size. For sharing a photo once, JPG is often enough.

Will the PNG keep Live Photo motion?

No. Only the still image is converted. Motion and audio from a Live Photo are not part of a PNG.

Why is the PNG much larger than the HEIC?

HEIC uses efficient HEVC compression. PNG stores the decoded pixels losslessly, which typically needs more disk space.
